While other screws and bolts require holes with threads, self tappers (or sheet metal screws) can tap their own hole as they are driven into it, saving you time and effort. Self tapping screws are useful for fastening material in a single operation.
Pointed tapping screws are the most common tapping screw and work best for thin material such as sheet metal, and soft material such as wood and drywall. For applications involving thicker sheet metal over 1mm, a self drilling screw is better suited.
