PPE Recycling

Every year half a million tonnes of textile microplastics enter the world’s oceans. As the largest contributor to waste in the UK, the construction industry can drive change by recycling PPE. As a leading supplier to Tier 1 & 2 construction, the Bryson team are passionate about driving change in our environment. We have a responsibility to help reduce our impact on the environment, through sustainable sourcing and minimising landfill waste.
Polyester and viscose commonly used in PPE, are the most prevalent microplastic fibres found in the ocean.
PPE is here to stay, so how can we dispose of it more responsibly?
Textiles including PPE can be effectively recycled and reused. Bryson is taking a step towards a greener solution. In the UK you can’t recycle all PPE in standard recycling bins, however, Bryson offers a bespoke PPE recycling service that recycles both hard and soft PPE.

The Green Solution & What is PPE Recycling?
Green isn’t just a colour here at Bryson, but an awareness of the environment. While we are environmental initiative driven, every site in the UK can make a difference by recycling PPE.
Bryson have partnered with a leading specialist in the destruction and recycling of all PPE used on construction sites to provide a circular economy for all used PPE where 80% is re-used or recycled into textiles and other products like insulation, and only 20% is used to create polyester fabrics or turned into energy. The best part is NOTHING goes to landfill!
We use the only UK based textile recycling company that mechanically strip and individualise textile fibres. PPE once stripped to fibres are recycled responsibly and re-used in textile production or other non-textile production as top priority. Our system ensures you can recycle all textile PPE, such as hi-vis clothing, workwear, face masks and gloves.
Not stopping at textiles, the Bryson PPE recycling scheme will reuse and recycle all plastics, polymers and metals as found in helmets, safety specs, safety boots and ear defenders. These items can either be stripped down for re-use as insulation, geo-textiles, wall partitions and sound board & energy. Absolutely nothing goes to waste.
Only 20% of all PPE can’t be recycled to form other products, in this case the PPE is melted to produce polyester fabric or ground into pellets that can be used for energy. Absolutely nothing goes to waste.
Three Tiers of PPE Recycling

Tier 1 Recycling
Re-purposing the material for future manufacturing of other garments. 20% of all PPE recycled goes into this category.
Tier 2 Recycling
60% of the PPE recycled into new products such as insulation, geotextiles, wall partitions and sound boarding.
Tier 3 Recycling
20% of the PPE recycled ends up here, it is melted down and either used to produce energy or turned into polyester fibres for new garments.
Why choose PPE recycling?
- Reduce waste on-site and avoid waste going to landfills.
- Support an environmentally friendly, responsible initiative.
- Promote a circular economy with re-use and re-purposed materials going back into UK manufacturing.
- Safe destruction of your company and project logos for peace of mind.
- Full audit trail of your recycled PPE for CSR and environmental reporting.
- Help build awareness within the industry to make better, more sustainable choices on waste management.
How Does PPE Recycling work?
1) We collect all your PPE direct from site from dedicated PPE Recycling bins.
2) Collections can be scheduled on a frequency of your choosing. For example, once a month or every 2 weeks. All PPE collections are done by an approved waste collection provider.
3) Your PPE goes to a secure recycling and shredding facility where any metal, polymers, wood or plastics are recycled out into Tiers 2 & 3 use. All remaining PPE textiles are shredded and recycled into Tier 1 use back into UK textile manufacturing.
4) Everything recycled is unrecognisable for brand protection.
5) All your PPE recycling is tracked from collection to destruction, so you have a full audit trail. You will also receive a Certificate of Destruction and reports detailing recycling weights and figures for each collection, and how much CO2 has been saved through recycling.
