Bryson PPE Recycling: Why Get Involved?
Unlike any other sector of industry, construction faces a responsibility to curb its impact on the natural world. With stats highlighting that construction, demolition & excavation (CD&E) accounted for 62% of the UK’s total waste generation in 2018 alone, calls for more sustainability efforts are steadily growing. Here at Bryson, we’re helping our customers lead the way with our pioneering PPE recycling service.
Personal protective equipment: it’s a bare essential, and is crucial to meet minimum safety standards across a broad range of industries. The use of PPE has increased significantly since the Personal Protective Equipment at Work (Amendment) Regulations were updated in April 2022, which mandated employers to provide PPE to all workers, both permanent and temporary. Whilst this should be welcomed from a safety perspective, it also presents a number of challenges in terms of protecting our natural world.
The Environmental Impact of PPE
The nationwide use of PPE poses a number of environmental impacts, ranging from its resource-intensive production to the negative consequences of disposing of it improperly. The use of non-biodegradable plastics in PPE has led to an increased presence in landfills, which can threaten marine life through the formation of microplastics. This only adds to the concern around the levels of energy required to weave the fibres, dye the fabrics and produce the chemically complex synthetic materials these products need.
The fact is that before the first brick is laid in any construction project, a worksite has already developed a significant energy cost and carbon footprint in providing their workers with the PPE they need to stay safe.
Bryson PPE Recycling: A Managed Solution
Every year, half a million tonnes of textile microplastics enter the world’s oceans. Whilst there is a lot of work to do to turn these sad statistics around, our PPE recycling service can play a significant role in helping construction companies reduce their own carbon footprint. The service is simple, and provides a streamlined, sustainable way of processing your PPE when it has reached end-of-life; including hi vis clothing, workwear, facemasks, gloves, helmets, boots and ear defenders. Here’s a quick summary of how it works:
- We send your PPE sacks: After you submit your PPE recycling request, we will deliver PPE sacks and bins to your site. Once you receive your sacks from Bryson, simply fill them with your used PPE and let us know when you’d like them to be collected.
- We collect your PPE sacks: A member of the Bryson team makes contact to confirm your sack collection date (see our official service page for collection timelines).
- We process your PPE: We process your PPE in a secure recycling and shredding facility, with 80% of the materials recycled into textiles and 20% used to create polyester fabrics or turned into energy. Nothing goes to landfill, and everything recycled is unrecognisable for brand protection.
- We send your certificate: All of your PPE is tracked for a fully comprehensive audit trail. You’ll receive a Certificate of Destruction, which is key for environmental reporting.
- Your PPE joins the circular economy: Once recycled, your PPE will be reintroduced to the UK supply chain in the form of other products or composite materials for the manufacturing industry.
Simply get in touch and we’ll take care of the rest!
