Fresh plans revealed under £130m Barnsley redevelopment

New work as part of a £130m redevelopment of Barnsley city centre to create a retail and leisure destination has been unveiled.

Fresh plans revealed under £130m Barnsley redevelopment

Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council published details of an £8m public realm project at the redevelopment site, known as the Glassworks. Due to go for public consultation in December, the public space includes outdoor dining, a permanent outdoor market and water features. The overall £130m Glassworks development is being led by the council and its partners Queensberry and Turner & Townsend. The 3.8 ha site will house 500,000 sq ft of retail and leisure units.

Phase one, which is an extension of the existing Metropolitan Centre, has started on site. Phase two received planning approval in July and is due to start on site in the first half of 2018. The public realm element is scheduled to start on site in April 2018 with a completion date of 2020, which is when phase two of the development is due to open.

Barnsley MBC councillor Roy Miller said:

“A quality public environment can have a significant impact on the economic life of our town and has always been an essential part of our regeneration strategy. Businesses are attracted to locations that offer well-designed, well-managed public places and these in turn attract customers and services.”
