Used for attaching timber to heavy-duty steel, up to 12mm thick, without the need for pre-drilling. The "wing tip" consists of two small wings on the screw shank that ream a hole in the timber, preventing the high-speed drill from burning out. Once the wings contact the steel, they shear off, allowing the self-tapping thread to cut into the metal for a strong connection.
